Beach

I found out that the Richard III society is holding its annual meeting in Worcester September 28-30. We saw Ian McKellen’s Richard III at the movie theatre (back in the days when were able to go out to movies) and then once at the Boulder Shakespeare Festival. The movie is set in late 1930s fascist England and underscores the timeless nature of Shakespeare.

On other literary fronts, I’m still savoring Don Quixote. I read a particularly relevant passage this morning:

“I am not pregnant by anybody,” responded Sancho, “and I’m not a man to let myself get pregnant, even by the King.

The snippet is from the Edith Grossman translation, which I like much more than others I’ve attempted unsuccessfully to read. The Ormsky translation has great woodcut illustrations by Gustave Doré.

Don Quixote is required background reading for my favorite beach author: The incomparable Arturo Perez-Reverta.  I just finished the Sun over Breda and am reading The Seville Communion.  His books are always well -represented at my favorite bookstore, Books on the Square.

No LifeguardStill no baby.  We’re spending the gorgeous evenings riding to the pond and playing on the little state beach – even after the lifeguards have gone home.  Hopefully this weekend I’ll post another announcement.

I like that metaphore – no lifeguards.  I see it as taking responsibility for my own adventures – good or ill.  Intellectual adventures – seeking new challenges and mentors.  Family adventures – having that new baby even though it means more years of diapers, more 4-year-old opposition.  So I see myself now on the cusp of many changes with no need for a lifeguard.

Meanwhile, I’m listening to Pandora and it’s a lot of fun.

We’ll catch the sun – my sweet daughter
As it spreads gold on the water
When We ArriveWe’ll watch trees spread their shadows
We’ll chase dragonflies and count the swallows
We’ll run downhill and up again
We’ll twirl our arms and spin

We’ll catch the sun – my sweet daughter
As it writes another golden day to water
When the moment is nearly perfect
When all is growing still and quiet
We’ll shout our joy to the wind
We’ll fill our lungs and shout again
